Country: Netherlands
Organization: Royal Tropical Institute
Registration deadline: 19 Apr 2017
Starting date: 19 Jun 2017
Ending date: 30 Jun 2017

The course ‘Using GIS in disease control programmes’ jointly organized by KIT and the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) Enschede, combines expertise in geographic information systems and its application in disease control.

The course gives an introduction to the use of GIS in disease control programmes and provides knowledge and basic skills on how GIS can be used for disease control, focusing on the epidemiological assessment of disease burden and the improvement of programmatic planning and management. Participants can choose from a range of practical case studies to tailor the course to their own needs.

Week 1

During the first week in Enschede, participants will be familiarized with key concepts and techniques in GIS, with an emphasis on developing basic software operating skills (ESRI ArcGIS vs 10.1 desktop).

Topics include:

  • Data collection and formats, including coordination systems, projections and geo-referencing
  • Data storage and processing
  • Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA)
  • Geo-spatial data mapping, geo-visualization and data interpretation.

Important issues are the spatial and temporal characteristics of health data, design, collection of spatial (baseline) data and geo-visualization.

Week 2

The second week, held at KIT in Amsterdam, provides an opportunity to apply and extend the GIS skills that have been learned in the first week. The course will address specific topics in disease epidemiology, in disease patterns in space and time, and in planning and evaluation of disease control programmes. Participants will work independently or in small groups on case studies using source data provided. The level of the case studies range from basic mapping to more advanced geo-statistical applications. Participants can choose between different topics according to their individual training requirements.

The programme includes the following themes:

  • Visualization and exploration of patterns of disease in space and time
  • Identification of risk factors of disease in space and time, including risk mapping
  • Assessment of accessibility and availability to health facilities
  • Visualization and analysis of health management information, such as indicators for monitoring and evaluation of programme performance and availability of (human) resources.

During the first and second week participants will be assisted in setting up a GIS based on their own data, as well as applying newly obtained GIS techniques to their data.
